A single-centre liver research biobank since 2002About the Biobank

The Basel Liver Biobank was established in the year 2002 by Prof. Markus H. Heim at the Department of Biomedicine, University of Basel and University Hospital Basel. Now in its third decade, the biobank has grown into one of Switzerland's most comprehensive single-centre liver biobanks, with over 4,000 patients enrolled across all major types of liver disease.

The biobank is led by Prof. Markus H. Heim, who has directed it since its foundation. It operates as a single-centre initiative, embedded within the clinical and research infrastructure of the University Hospital Basel.

The biobank collects liver biopsy samples from patients with all major types of liver disease, including metabolic-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), alcoholic liver disease, viral hepatitis, autoimmune liver disease, cholestatic disorders, drug-induced liver diseases, primary and secondary malignencies. All samples are linked to comprehensive clinical data at the time of biopsy. For a subset of patients, longitudinal follow-up data are also available, enabling studies of disease progression over time.

Clinical and sample data are managed using REDCap and LabKey. Patient-centered information including diagnosis, pathology reports and informed consent is stored in REDCap. The REDCap database is hosted on a secure server at the University Hospital Basel, protected by a firewall and accessible only to authorised users with password-protected accounts. All data is pseudonymised and transferred to LabKey for research use, ensuring that no personal information is shared with researchers.
